PC Running Slow? 7 Fixes That Work
Expert Solutions from Amherst's Trusted Computer Repair Team

Nothing kills productivity faster than a slow PC. Whether you're in Amherst, Clarence, or anywhere in Western New York, a sluggish computer can turn simple tasks into frustrating ordeals. The good news? Most slow PC issues have straightforward fixes.

At MacSolutions Plus, we've spent 24+ years diagnosing and fixing slow computers for Buffalo-area businesses and residents. Here are the 7 most effective solutions we use—listed from quickest wins to more involved fixes.

1. Restart Your PC (Seriously)

Before anything else, try a simple restart. Many Amherst businesses leave their PCs running 24/7, which causes memory leaks and background process buildup.

Why it works: Restarting clears RAM, closes stuck processes, and applies pending Windows updates that can bog down performance.

Quick tip: Do a full shutdown, wait 30 seconds, then power back on. This is more effective than just "restart" for clearing certain issues.

2. Check Startup Programs

Most slow PC complaints we see at our Amherst location trace back to too many programs launching at startup. Every app that auto-starts eats into your boot time and available memory.

How to fix it:

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click the Startup tab
- Disable programs you don't need immediately (Steam, Spotify, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.)
- Right-click and choose "Disable"

What to keep: Antivirus, cloud backup services, and essential business apps. Everything else can launch when you actually need it.

3. Scan for Malware

Slow performance is often the first sign of malware, especially if you're in Buffalo's small business community handling customer data.

Run these scans:

- Windows Defender: Built-in, free, and surprisingly effective. Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection
- Malwarebytes: Our go-to for deeper scans. The free version catches what Defender misses

Red flags: Browser redirects, random pop-ups, new toolbars you didn't install, or your homepage changing on its own. If you see these, bring your PC to our Amherst shop—malware removal is one of our most common services.

4. Upgrade to an SSD

This is the single most impactful upgrade for slow PCs. If your computer still uses a traditional hard drive (HDD), switching to a solid-state drive (SSD) will feel like buying a new machine.

Real-world impact:

- Boot time drops from 2-3 minutes to 15-30 seconds
- Programs launch instantly instead of "thinking" for 10+ seconds
- File transfers happen 5-10x faster

Cost: $80-$150 for the drive + installation. We handle SSD upgrades daily at our Buffalo location—usually a 1-2 hour turnaround with full data migration included.

Not sure if you have an SSD? Open Task Manager → Performance tab → click Disk 0. If it says "HDD," you're due for an upgrade.

5. Add More RAM

If your PC slows down when you have multiple browser tabs, email, and Excel open simultaneously, you likely need more RAM (memory).

How much do you need?

- 8GB: Bare minimum for Windows 10/11. Works for basic tasks but struggles with multitasking
- 16GB: Sweet spot for most Amherst professionals. Handles business apps, video calls, and dozens of browser tabs
- 32GB+: For designers, video editors, or engineers running demanding software

Check current RAM: Right-click the Windows taskbar → Task Manager → Performance tab → Memory. If you're regularly hitting 80%+ usage, upgrade time.

We stock RAM for most PC models and can install it same-day at our WNY location.

6. Clean Up Disk Space

A nearly-full hard drive slows everything down. Windows needs at least 10-20% free space to run efficiently.

Quick cleanup steps:

- Type "Disk Cleanup" in the Windows search bar and run it
- Check "Temporary files," "Downloads," and "Recycle Bin
- Click "Clean up system files" for deeper cleaning (removes old Windows updates)

Big space hogs to check:

- Downloads folder (forgotten installers and files)
- Desktop (large files stored there slow boot times)
- Old photos/videos (move to external drive or cloud storage)

Buffalo business owners: If you're running out of space regularly, we can upgrade to a larger SSD or set up network storage for your office.

7. Reset or Reinstall Windows

When nothing else works, a fresh Windows installation can restore your PC to like-new performance. This is especially effective for PCs that have been upgraded through multiple Windows versions or accumulated years of software clutter.

Two options:

- Keep your files: Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → Reset this PC → "Keep my files." Takes 1-2 hours.
- Clean slate: Full reinstall (wipes everything). Best for serious issues. Requires backup first.

Before you reset: Back up important documents, photos, and browser bookmarks. If you're not comfortable with this process, we handle PC resets and fresh Windows installations at our Amherst shop—with full data backup and restoration included.

Still Slow After Trying Everything?

Sometimes slow performance points to hardware failure—a failing hard drive, overheating CPU, or dying power supply. These issues require diagnosis and professional repair.

Warning signs of hardware problems:

- Random crashes or blue screens
- Loud fan noise or excessive heat
- PC slows down after 20-30 minutes of use
- Strange clicking or grinding sounds
