Difficulty: Easy
For Families

What You'll Accomplish in 15 Minutes
Family Sharing connects up to 6 people so you can share purchases, photos, and location—without sharing passwords. Here's what Buffalo families use it for:

Share Purchases
Buy an app once, everyone gets it. No more "Dad, can I buy this game?" texts.

Family Photos
Everyone adds photos to one shared album automatically. Grandparents see pics without asking.

Find Devices
Left your iPhone at Amherst Tim Hortons? Your spouse can locate it from their phone.

Screen Time
Set app limits for kids remotely. No battles about YouTube before homework.

Step-by-Step: 6 Easy Steps

1
Choose Your Organizer
One person (usually the parent who pays for iCloud) becomes the "organizer." This person invites everyone else.
Time: 30 seconds

2
Open Settings
On the organizer's iPhone, tap Settings → at the top → Family Sharing → Set Up Your Family
Time: 1 minute

3
Invite Family Members
Tap Add Member → Enter their phone number or email. They'll get a text invitation to accept.
Time: 2 minutes per person

4
Each Person Accepts
Family members tap the invitation link, then tap Join. They keep their own Apple ID and password—nothing changes except sharing.
Time: 1 minute per person

5
Choose What to Share
Go back to Settings → Family Sharing. Turn on: Purchase Sharing, Location Sharing, iCloud Storage, Apple Music (if you subscribe).
Time: 3 minutes

6
Set Up Shared Album
Open Photos app → Albums tab → scroll to Shared Albums → + → Name it "Family" → Invite everyone. Photos added here sync automatically.
Time: 5 minutes

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Problem: "Can't Invite This Person"
Why: They left a Family Sharing group in the past 91 days. Apple makes you wait to prevent abuse.
Fix: Wait out the 91 days, or create a new Apple ID for them (less ideal). Contact us if you need help navigating this.

Problem: "Purchase Sharing is Off"
Why: Family member disabled it in their settings, or they have a separate payment method they prefer.
Fix: They need to go to Settings → Family Sharing → Purchase Sharing → toggle ON. Organizer can't force this.

Problem: "I Don't Want to Share Everything"
Why: Privacy concerns—teens don't want parents seeing every app they download.
Fix: Purchase Sharing is optional. You can share just photos and location without sharing app purchases. Each feature toggles independently.

Problem: "Shared Album Photos Not Showing"
Why: Person hasn't accepted the album invitation, or iCloud Photos is off.
Fix: Check Settings → Photos → iCloud Photos is ON. Re-send album invitation if needed.

Real Example: Williamsville Family's Vacation
How one Western New York family used Family Sharing during their trip to Myrtle Beach:

The Setup (Done in Buffalo Before They Left)
Mom = Organizer. Set up Family Sharing with Dad, two teens (16 and 14), and Grandma (who stayed home).
What they shared: Photos, location, Apple Music family plan.
What they didn't share: Purchase sharing (teens have their own money).

During the Trip

Shared Photos: Everyone added beach pics to "Family" album. Grandma saw photos in real-time from Buffalo—no "Send me that pic!" texts.
Find My: 14-year-old went to arcade. Parents checked location—"He's at Broadway at the Beach, he's fine."
Apple Music: Car ride playlist worked on everyone's phone—no Bluetooth battles.
Savings: Family Apple Music ($17/month) vs 4 individual plans ($11 each = $44/month). Saved $28/month.

Bonus Tips Buffalo Families Love

Location Sharing
Use case: "Where's Dad?" Answer without calling.
How: Open Find My app → People tab → Shows everyone's real-time location on map.
Privacy note: Anyone can turn this off anytime in their own settings. Not mandatory.

Shared Calendars
Use case: Everyone sees dentist appointments, soccer practice, family dinners.
How: Calendar app → Calendars at bottom → Add Calendar → Add Shared Calendar → Invite family.
Pro tip: Color-code each person so you see who's busy at a glance.

Ask to Buy (Kids)
Use case: Kid wants to buy an app/game—parent approves or declines from their phone.
How: Settings → Family Sharing → tap child's name → Ask to Buy → toggle ON.
Age limit: Works until kid turns 18, then auto-disables.

Screen Time Management
Set app limits, downtime, and content restrictions for kids—all managed from your iPhone.

Set App Limits
Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Choose categories (Social, Games, Entertainment) → Set time limit (e.g., 1 hour/day).
Example: "TikTok = 30 minutes daily. After that, it locks until tomorrow."

Schedule Downtime
Settings → Screen Time → Downtime → Set hours (e.g., 9pm-7am). During downtime, only approved apps work (Phone, Messages, educational apps you choose).
Example: "No games or social media after 9pm on school nights."

Important: Kids can request "One More Minute" extensions. You approve or deny from your phone. They can't bypass it without your password.
